Home Dehumidifiers

Perfect for tackling damp & humidity problems in the home

There are many ways moisture is produced in a UK home – cooking, cleaning, showering, drying laundry and even breathing. All of this moisture helps to raise the relative humidity level within the home – the amount of moisture in the air in the space.
Modern homes have great insulation and double-glazed windows that help keep heat inside – however that also makes it more difficult to for fresh air to ventilate the home and for moisture to escape.

Excess moisture levels in the home can lead to condensation forming on surfaces and windows, damp patches and mould on walls. It can make the air feel sticky and uncomfortable – which can affect people with allergies and asthma. Some of these issues are less noticeable in the warmer months of the year when you are more likely to have windows open so that fresh air can ventilate your home. However, cold and wet weather can quickly wreak havoc if the problem is not dealt with properly. Using a dehumidifier at home is an effective way of controlling humidity, to prevent damp and mould issues from occurring, and make the air much more comfortable.

Refrigerant v Desiccant

One of the major questions when looking at a dehumidifier for your home is whether you need a refrigerant or desiccant dehumidifier.

Refrigerant dehumidifiers are the most common type of dehumidifier. They feature an internal compressor which uses refrigerant gas to cool a set of coils. The coils cool the moisture in the air to below its dew point, causing it to condense into liquid and drop into a colleciton tank - or to be drained directly out of the unit by a hose. These dehumidifiers are efficient and cheap to run. They are most effective in warmer conditions - so they are suited to most rooms in the home, including bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and conservatories.

Desiccant dehumidifiers use a wheel of absorbant material to remove moisture from the air. The moisture is vented out of the unit as water vapour, via ducting. These units work effectively even in lower temperatures, where refrigerant dehumidifiers often struggle to perform. They even well well below freezing. Desiccant dehumidifiers are best used in more challenging, unheated conditions, such as basements, garages, attics and cellars.
